∙ 14y agoRussian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) was the first human in spce, making a single orbit in his space capsule "Vostok 1", official designation Vostok 3KA-2, on April 12, 1961. The spacecraft was launched by an R-7 rocket of the 8K72K configuration. The first US suborbital flight took place later on May 5, 1961, when a Redstone rocket boosted Alan Shepard (1923-1998) into space in the capsule Freedom 7. Another suborbital flight was by Gus Grissom on July 21, 1961 in the capsule Liberty Bell 7.
