The Spanish Armada was a fleet of 130 ships that sailed from A Coruña in August 1588 as an escort to troops from Flanders for a planned invasion England to depose Queen Elizabeth and prevent English interference in the Spanish Netherlands and (hopefully) predation by English privateers.
Unfortunately for the Armada, bad choices by leaders, aggressive, effective attacks by the British and Dutch, bad weather, and general bad fortune prevented them from ever linking up with the army they were to escort and more than a third of the fleet was destroyed before they could make it back to Spain.
The fleet of ships sent by Spain in the time of Queen Elizabeth I is called the Spanish Armada (though that would not be what the Spanish called it.).

During 1812-1813 the British took up a defensive strategy, however after Napoleon's defeat the British chose a more aggressive strategy.
The British were confident of swift victory over the rebels during the American Revolution because they had a powerful and disciplined army, resources, and support from other European nations. They also underestimated the determination and guerrilla tactics of the American rebels, which prolonged the war and ultimately led to the British defeat.
The English (not British) defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588 when Shakespeare was 24.
