Martin Luther did not start a new religion, but rather initiated the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century by challenging certain practices of the Catholic Church. This movement led to the formation of various Protestant denominations but did not result in the creation of a singular new religion.
Martin Luther wanted a religion where the people's access to God was not suppressed by the authority, restrictions and rule of the church. He could see how the power wielded by the Catholic Church had corrupted those in authority, and he knew that the Salvation of the people of the church was of less importance to those in authority, than the concept of lining their pockets. Luther believed that people should be able to come freely to God in any situation, at any time. One of the reasons he translated The Bible into German was to make God's Word more accessible to the common people.
Martin Luther did not personally name a church or religion after himself but the people that followed him were called Lutherans and that is where the Lutheran Church got it name.
The actions of Martin Luther (and others) caused a split from The Roman Catholic Church and a branch of Christianity called Protestants was the result.
