He said to take a census of all the men 20 years or older who are able to go to war. The entire book consists of two censuses or 'numberings' of the Israelites. This is how the book might have gotten its name. Numbers also means "in the desert" in Hebrews. So the book could have also derived it's name from that, because the book of Numbers was recorded when the Israelites were on their journey to the promise land of Canaan.
