He was Thomas J. Jackson.

And he was nicknamed 'Stonewall' in the war's first battle (Bull Run), after a call-to-action by Brigadier-General Barnard Bee, shouting "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall."

This may have been praise for his stout defence of his position. Or it may have been criticism for Jackson not coming to help Bee's own unit.

As Bee was mortally wounded an hour later, it was never possible to establish which.
