One of America's most renown statesman, Henry Clay owned approximately 60 slaves who worked on his Kentucky plantation named Ashland. Clay had for many years called slavery an evil institution. Matters came to a hilt when in the 1844 campaign, when Clay was speaking in Indiana and was confronted by a Hiram Mendenhall, who presented Clay with a petition that challenged him to free his slaves.

Clay effectively defended this situation, however, it would haunt him throughout his career.
