Politicians need to make themselves liked by the general public, to get elected, and it was observed that everybody likes their own mother, and everybody likes apple pie, so if a politician were to speak up in favor of those things, there would be no controversy and everyone would agree. Of course, in reality it's not quite that obvious, but nonetheless, you can find in the current political scene that everybody speaks up for job creation, for national security, for bringing the national debt under control, and so forth. This is safer than raising controversial issues about which some people will disagree strenuously. So in a metaphorical sense, we can still see politicians who stick to mom and apple pie as their topics.
