The official name of Puerto Rico is the Commonwealth of Puero Rico. It became owned by the United States after the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1898, ending the Spanish-American War. It is an unincorporated territory of America, with a population of 3,667,084. The island is also popularly known in Spanish as "La Isla del Encanto" which means "The Island of Enchantment" in English.
The "real name" of any place is what most people associated with that place choose to call it.
First known name for the island was boriken used by the native Tainos at the time Columbus first visited in 1493. Some Puerto Rican's still call it borinken, with an "n".
Columbus named it San Juan Bautista. Juan Ponce De Leon named the first settlement Porto Rico. Later the name of the city and the island became interchanged so the island is now, and has been for centuries, called Puerto Rico and the capitol city is San Juan.
Today territory is officially Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico and some call it La Isla del Encanto.
The Taino called the island Borikén. Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista.
Puerto Rico was originally called Borik`en by the Tai'no Indians the original inhabitants, until the Spaniards came took it over and named it San Juan, later it became Puerto Rico
