The state was originally going to be named "Kanawha," but got changed due the fact that a river and a county shared the same name and because the men on the Wheeling Convention felt that "Kanawha" was too difficult to spell.

It was named after Virginia which was named after Queen Elizabeth I, because she was called the virgin queen. It was going to be named Kanawha but the Legislature came to their senses.
