These were the opening shots of the war - Confederate artillery firing on the small island garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina (the state that had started the conflict).
The Union garrison abandoned the fort and escaped. Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteer troops for the Union armies. And four more states retaliated by joining the Confederacy.
