It is likely to have been in the megolitihic periods - probably late stone age - Upper Palaeolithic (anytime from 35,000 BC onwards). It was likely that they were first used for grinding, then maybe as some kind of wheel barrow/cart. It would have been a lot later that they become used for transport other than being dragged behind loaded with things.
