with an honest statement about obesity in that era
General Robert E. Lee, as the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia faced a number of disadvantages as the Battle of Antietam unfolded in late September of 1862. For example:* He was weak in troop numbers compared to the Union army;* His forces were weakened by the long march from Virginia; and* A good number of Stonewall Jackson's troops were late arriving from Harper's Ferry.
To achieve any sort of meaningful victory at Antietam, Lee would need to defend his lines of battle and drive the larger Union army back and force it to retreat behind South Mountain. If Lee's forces could not do that, then his only recourse would be to retreat back to Virginia. Lee was counting on a victory in that he believed the commander of the Army of the Potomac, General George B. McClellan was not good at battlefield tactics.
The alternative name was the Battle of Sharpsburg. Both are reasonably good names: the battle was mainly fought in the area between the town of Sharpsburg and Antietam Creek.
As far as helping slaves themselves it wasn't, it was for the sake of the union, industrialism and the view of america, the world helped get the slaves freed.
Union of Good was created in 2001.
