Following is one quote from Isambard Kingdom Brunel: [I am] opposed to the laying down of rules or conditions to be observed in the construction of bridges lest the progress of improvement tomorrow might be embarrassed or shackled by recording or registering as law the prejudices or errors of today. - Isambard Kingdom Brunel speaking to the 1847 Commission set up after the collapse of the River Dee [Bridge] The convoluted language of this quote is rather old-fashioned to us. The basic point is -- don't let your building codes get out-of-date.
He wasn't a bad businessman. He had high ethical standards. He wasn't always successful in his ventures however, because of various factors. His projects were very large scale, highly innovative and in a time when the project management and costing methods of today had only just begun to be developed. Like high risk new ventures today, some worked, some didn't, and some ended up costing far more to complete than was foreseen, just like now. Brunel's biggest failing or strength depending on your point of view was his ability to persuade people to keep supporting his projects through to completion when others would have given up. Brunel lived the life of a gentrleman in Londo society, paid his debts, and his achievements still stand today as great examples. So hardly a bad businessman.
