The Etch-A-Sketch contains very fine aluminum powder, which sticks to the glass. The knobs are connected to wires and pulleys, which move a plastic stylus vertically and horizontally. The stylus scrapes a tiny amount of the aluminum powder off the glass, leaving a visible line. If you draw all over the screen and clear away all the aluminum powder, you can see the mechanism inside.
It was invented in 1957 by André Cassagnes, a French electrician. He took the idea to a plastics company; they developed a prototype and patented it in 1959 and did not give him credit on the patent. Ohio Art Company bought a license to make the toy in the US and announced the Etch-A-Sketch in July, 1960.It was invented on July 12,1960.
It is aluminum powder. The powder is mixed with polystyrene beads, which help distribute the powder. It's possible that the beads also create a little electrostatic charge, which makes the powder stick to the glass better.
