Though there is biblical precedence for being 'called' to do God's work without interferences in life - ie...wife and family - and many a benefit has mankind reaped from these monks and nuns, probably the main argument would be that the 'crème of the crop or the most educated and wealthy of men and women, entered into this practice and did not pass along their 'genes' and knowledge to family. Most all medicinal and other types of knowledge were stored by these few people.
