She goes off to their secret world Terabithia and drowns while trying to get across a creek to their world (and thought who was already there) to meet Jesse Aarons. Once coming back from Washington D.C. he is told his beest friend has just died of the drown. He visits her family house ,which feels different from the many times he has visited, to grieve of her death. after a while after her death, he builds a bridge to Terabithia that way there would be a safe crossing when he wanted to go and so when his youngest sister grows up she would be able to visit it too.
