In Dante's "Inferno," the punishment in the seventh level, Violence, is for those who committed acts of violence towards others. Here, blasphemers are subjected to constant rain of fire, while violent sinners are immersed in a river of boiling blood and fire if they hurt others physically. Additionally, those who committed suicide are transformed into thorny trees and fed upon by harpies.

In Dante's Inferno, there are nine concentric circles of hell, each representing a different sin and punishment. The levels go from Limbo (where unbaptized souls reside) to the deepest level, where Satan is trapped in ice at the center of the Earth. Each circle punishes different sins, such as lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud, and treachery.

Dido was a widowed Queen of Carthage in Virgil's poem of the Aeneid. She become lover to Aeneas the hero of the story but committed suicide when Aeneas abandoned her to continue his mission to establish a new civilization in Italy. Perhaps why Dante places Dido in the 2nd circle of Lust and not in circle 7: Violence with the suicides, is that Dante felt her betrayal to her deceased husband in taking Aeneas as a lover out of a lustful desire was stronger then the way of her death.
