Christopher Columbus was trying to get to the spice islands (specifically Japan), but since he didn't know of the existence of America, he ended up landing in the West Indies.
China, the purpose was because he wanted to find riches and spices and he wanted to prove Columbus's theory that you could get to the east by sailing west and he did, or at least his crew did.
