Capitulation. His intention was to make victory for Russia to great a price for them to continue fighting. It's a simple idea, would you have the heart to keep fighting in Washington DC was captured? Burn the capital city of Stalingrad, hunker down for the winter and plunder supplies. Of course he failed at all of it. IF leaders of the world payed attention in history they would not make the same mistakes others have. Napoleon also went into Russia in winter, his troop's, what was left of them, resorted to cannibalism to survive. He was never again able to wield his war machine after that. Neither was Hitler. More men died of exposure and illness then in all the fighting. Hitler and Napoleon thought that if they spilled the blood of innocents in the Capital city the citizens would capitulate, buy were they wrong.

The Germans sought to sever the supplies that traveled down the Volga to the interior of Russia .They wanted to control the city of Stalingrad , now Volgograd , in the hopes that by cutting this logistical lifeline they would win the war on the Eastern Front since this river supplied Moscow and other large cities in the Russian interior .
