∙ 11y agoLee's goal was to threaten the major cities of the North; Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.; in the hopes of cause a truce or to force Washington to sue for peace, at the least to prove that the South was still a threat, and to force Lincoln out of office in the elections of '64. Mead's goal was to threaten Lee's line of retreat by taking up a strong defensive position between Lee and his home base of operations, so that Lee would be forced to attack him. Mead's ultimate goal was to destroy the Army of Northern Virginia. Meade, though able to halt Lee's advance, was unable to pursue Lee's retreating forces and crush them. Lee retreated in good order.
