If you are talking about the Royal Air Force, or the British air force, here you go:

Any air force should be able to do two things: defend its country and attack other countries. The RAF? No different. During WWII, the RAF served to keep German bombers away from Britain and also to shift to the offensive against German planes and surface targets. Anti-aircraft guns, ships, and ground troops never could and probably never will replace an air force, so there you go.
