It wasn't written by Harold Melvin of the Blue Notes--the song was written by the team of Victor Carstarphen, Gene McFadden and John Whitehead, who wrote many of the group's songs. The motivation was to get everybody to wake up, in the sense of leaving aside hate and conflict and working together to make a better world.
