Cheetahs became endangered for multiple reasons. Farmers believed and in some cases believed rightly, that cheetahs were taking livestock. The farmers became angry at the loss of their livihood and began killing the cheetahs.

Another big reason for the endangerment of cheetahs is the fact that cheetahs are severely inbred. The sperm count in male cheetahs is very low causing problems with breeding and the gene pool is not very diverse.

High mortality rates among cheetah cubs is another reason for their endangerment. Cheetah cubs can become prey to other predators or they may be born with birth defects due to the lack of genetic diversity.
