However, Russia supported Serbia (they also had plans for the Balkans). France, who had an allegiance with Russia, backed her up. Germany supported Austria-Hungary as they needed Austria-Hungary (which was quite powerful at that time) to be on their side. The Germans wanted to expand their influence in other parts of the world but Britain, the country with the biggest empire, got annoyed at this as they still wanted to remain the biggest empire. However, this wasn't the real reason why Britain entered the war. When the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy) invaded Belgium, to get to France and take it, Britain entered the war because they had an allegiance with Belgium. Italy got involved because they thought that Germany and Austria-Hungary would win the war and therefore, it was advantagous to be on their good side.
