I think the plague was instrumental in turning people to religion as being something very personal. Their desperation and hope is illustrated in the paintings of St. Roch, St Charles, and St. Macarius of Ghent, and the Madonna, either showing the Saints caring for victims of the plague, pleading with the Virgin Mary to heal the afflicted, and providing hope that the Madonna will save them as she did Venice (as depicted in the painting, The Madonna Save Venice from the Plague). While I was raised in the Catholic Church I left it 30 years ago, yet even now when in times of crisis I still find comfort in rituals of their prayers.

During the time of the black death many people became Christains because they thought they caught the black death as a punishment for their sins and thought that if they got penance(cleansing of sins)the black death would go away.

They believed it was the work of God's anger towards the people for being a sinful human race.

They also believed that is was the King death that had the body of a skeleton but it could still walk and talk. People believed that if you underestimated or hurt his feelings and got him angry, he would attack you in your sleep and you would have the black plague. You would then only have a week to live

Don't worry I am currently learning the Black Death in school now! But I hope I answer your question!

In two ways does religion take a place during the time period. People turned away from God as well as turned to God and moral lives. The ones of fading faith thought that since God was all powerful how could He not stop the plague and stop the many deaths, still existent today with people after loved ones pass away. The ones who turned to God saw that if they led moral lives their little time on Earth would then lead to a never ending afterlife.
