It was a part of the 'intake' process to the camps. Persons determined to be of no value as labor would be sent for immediate extermination, the old, the very young, the ill and the infirm were of little or no value to the Nazi slave labor camps. Sometimes people were saved because a certain skill was in short supply like cobblers, or tailors or machinists. It was an important part of the program to exploit fully anyone of use before they were killed.

___

Routine selections were carried only out at Auschwitz, not at other camps. At extermination camps, a very small number of men were sometimes selected to help sort valuables and get rid of the corpses, but the point of these camps was industrial-style killing. All other camps were, by definition, forced labour camps.

Selection was done by German SS personnel. All working age men and physical fit women were sent in one direction (to be worked to death) and all older men and women as well as children were sent in another direction (to be gassed to death).

Selections were the process of who was 'fit', who could work and who couldn't. Those who couldn't were gassed.

Selections upon arrival at Auschwitz were the process of who would be sent to forced labor and who would be sent to the gas chambers automatically. Women, elderly, children would be sent to the right to die, and the men to the left.

Newly arrived Jews were given a quick glance by SS doctors. Those considered unfit for work because they were too old, too young or had obvious infirmities and visibly pregnant women were sent to the gas chambers and the others were selected (chosen) for slave labour.

It wasn't good. The SS guards of the camp(s) would force the prisoners out of the barracks, make them run around naked, and do medical examinations on them. If you were healthy, you remained in the camp; if you were sick, however, you were killed.
