During the years of the French revolution, he fought at first as volunteer private in the revolutionary Army. He soon was appointed staff officer and then, in 1797, he was appointed brigadier general in the Army of Rhine. In 1798, after some 5 months as Commander of the Army of Rome, he was transferred to the Army of Mainz as Commander of its left wing. His military career carried on in the years of Consulate and Empire, when the French Revolution was over, reaching the rank of Marshall and Count of the Empire.
