September 17, 1862. This was the day the Battle of Antietam (as the Yankees called it), or Sharpsburg (as the Rebels called it) was fought. The Confederates named battles after the nearest town, the Yanks after the nearest body of water - in this case, Antietam Creek. This was a one day battle and the single bloodiest day of the war. Gettysburg had more casualties, but they were inflicted over the three days of that battle.
