Well It is probably more likely to be a Skunk :) Because it has a lethal gas that comes from its bum :D

Much like the skunk, the striped polecat can shoot these smelly secretions from their anal glands to help deter predators. While the animal's smell is amazing enough, even more amazing is the fact that some native peoples actually use the polecat's incredibly nasty secretions as a perfume. It's likely they use it to mask their own smell when hunting, however, rather than an affinity for the smell of a striped polecat.

This question doesn't have an answer. It is impossibe to know what they smelled like since man didn't exist at that time and all that there is left are the bones. Bones don't smell. It could be imagined that the world was a smelly place.
