A cook could be a servant, in the same general class as a serf, or a freeman, or the independent owner of an establishment preparing food, making the cook middle class. Since few people living in towns or cities could afford kitchens, laboring people in such places usually purchased prepared food, so cooks were often people who owned businesses.

1st Answer:There were no "middle class women" in the middle ages. There was no "middle class". This is a modern industrial idea. Women in the middle ages did not have any rights, they didn't have "jobs", they were chattel, and depending on their rank they lived pretty well or pretty badly. If they were a peasant woman they worked from sun up to sun down. They had to cook, take care of children ( they often died in child birth), make candles, help work the fields, feed any animals they had, carry in water, start of the fire for heat and cooking, and do anything else that was needed. If they lived to 25 or 30 they were old. A noble woman had it a bit better but she was expected to help the family in land or wealth by marriage. Most women poor or rich were married by 12-13 to an older man. Life was short and life was hard.2nd Answer:Middle class women of the Middle Ages had a lot of jobs available for them, but usually, these women worked with their husbands in family businesses. Young women learned trades or merchandising skills from their parents, and their abilities were among the things that made them attractive as mates. The businesses could be trades, such as baking or carpentry, or could be mercantile. Guild memberships were available to women who were in families of male guild members, and widows often ran the family business until they could pass them to their children or retired. One of the most important developments of the Middle Ages was the rise of the Middle Class. It is a topic for high school history classes, but the importance of the middle class from the beginning of the Middle Ages is not often discussed. I will not go past citing the examples of the republican government of Venice, from the 8th century, or the early development of the guild system, from as early as the 6th.I have attached a link below to the related question, "Did women have professions in the middle ages?" From it are links to articles describing women who were professionals and guild memberships for women.I have also attached a link for those who are interested in women's rights during the time, "What were the rights of women in the middle ages?"
