The primary social consequence was the creation of a whole new caste of people: the middle class. Supply and demand tells us that if there are a lot of people, wages are low because it's easy to find a replacement worker who'll work for the same or even lower wage. Unskilled laborers, which most people were in those days, had little if any bargaining power. You could do alright for yourself if you had a specialized profession, like blacksmith or ship's captain, but otherwise you were dirt poor and destined to stay that way.

The Black Death changed that in relatively short order. Suddenly, 1/3 of the workforce was gone, and if you wanted that field plowed in time for winter, you might suddenly find yourself a few plowers short because the land owner next door offered more money. People from the serf class could now bargain for better wages and, perhaps more importantly, they could buy more things to improve their standard of living. This, in turn, drove the economy. And for the first time, the money was flowing at the bottom rather than just circling the top. This was a monumental shift of economic and social power.
