Until 2008, the tallest man-made structure in the world was the Taipei 101 in Taiwan, standing at 1,671 feet (509.2 meters) tall. It held this record from its completion in 2004 until the opening of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2010.

Its elevators, capable of travelling at 16.83 m/s (60.6 km/h, 37.5 mph), also claimed the title of the world's fastest.Taipei 101 will likely relinquish both titles to the Burj Dubai (United Arab Emirates) when that building opens in 2008. However, Burj Khalifa, Dubai, which currently holds the record for the tallest building in the world at 828m (2,717 ft.), officially opened on 4th January 2010, which was not very long after the end of 2009.
The twin towers were the highest buildings but not for long. When the were still standing from 1998-2004 the were the highest building.

As of 26 September 2008, the building, which is still under construction, stood at 707 m (2,320 ft).
