The medieval Church levied a payment called circ-sceat in Old English, now called church-scot, which is technically a type of rent, not a tax, that went towards the upkeep of the priest. The Church also required a tenth of all produce or income on certain products - this was called a tithe (Old English teogoþa, a tenth).

In addition, it was expected that anyone being married or having a baptism or funeral service would donate a small sum to the altar - in reality this was a payment to the priest. In England this donation could be a single silver penny.

Who caused the peasants revolt?

The Peasants' Revolt took place in England in 1381. They were upset when the nobles instituted another poll tax for them to pay. The peasants were also forced to work for free on church land, sometimes two days a week. This didn't leave them enough time to work their own land and their families often went hungry as a result.

What did the peasants revolt want?

All the angry peasats who wanted higher wages, lower taxes and an end to work service. There were around 100,000 (bigger than the World cup final) and their leader was called Wat Tyler, who was killed at Smithfield. Another important guy was the priest John Ball, who preached to the peasants that revolting was a good idea. After the revolt, he was hung, drawn and quartered - the quarters were sent to four different places and put on display. Hope this helps! Anon., 12, West Bridgford School

What were the conditions like before the French Revolution began?

It was an Absolute Monarchy. Just prior to the Revolution the monarchs were beginning to work at reforms - based on some of the ideas as expressed by the philosophes of the Enlightenment. Unfortunately such changes were too little too late and the people continued to find the monarchy too 'out of touch' with reality as they knew and experienced it.
