Teton Sioux is not the name of a tribe - it is simply a name for all the western tribes of Sioux, also called Lakotas. These were the Oglala, Minniconjou, Sans Arcs, Blackfoot Sioux, Hunkpapa, Brule and Two Kettle tribes.

"What were these tribes known for?" could be answered in about 50 volumes of books. What they are today commonly known for (not the same thing) is taking part in the battle of the Little Bighorn in 1879, as part of their resistance to the westward expansion of settlers, miners, troops and other elements of white "civilization".

Historians and anthropologists known them for far more than just that.

Among the Ojibwe people the Lakotas were known for cutting off the heads of men, women and children of the Ojibwe tribe; among the Arikaras, Mandans and Hidatsas the Lakotas were known as aggressive enemies who prevented them from hunting and terrified them into remaining in their villages; among the Crows the Lakotas were known as inveterate enemies, horse thieves and indiscriminate murderers who prevented the Crows from visiting trading posts.
