The Maastricht Treaty
The Treaty of Rome started the European Economic Community, which eventually be came known as the European Union. The Maastricht Treaty was the treaty that formally started the use of the name "European Union". It was signed in Maastricht, which is in the Netherlands.
The Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1992, and came into effect on the 1st of November 1993, officially creating the European Union.

The members of the European Economic Community signed the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 to create the European Union.
