During World War II in the Pacific Theater, a number of turning-points can be identified. Generally considered to be the most important, the Battle of Midway (June 1942) witnessed the decisive defeat of a large Japanese naval force by a small American force. This American victory not only turned back the Japanese attempt to invade Midway Island; it also resulted in the losses of irreplaceable ships and pilots for the Japanese.
