They planned to flank the south but i didn't work and the south tried to do the same but then changed there war plan.
The Union troops attempted to turn the Confederates left flank.
Bull Run flows generally west to east. The Confederates were on the south bank, extending eastward from the Stone Bridge over the Run. The Confederates were not in a solid line. They had detachments of about a brigade at every Ford for about six miles east of the bridge. The Confederates also planned to try to turn the Yankee left flank, by crossing some brigades farthest from the bridge over to the north side and moving around the end of the Yankee line, onto the Yankee flank and into their rear. But the Yankees got their flanking attempt moving first.
Several brigades of Yankees marched upstream, to the west of the Stone Bridge, crossed the Run at upstream fords (places shallow enough that the Run could be waded across) and marched back down the south (Confederate) side, until they came in on the end of the line of the single Confederate Brigade holding the Stone Bridge. Only desperate fighting by this Brigade held up the Yanks long enough for more Confederates to arrive. Each side then fed in more troops until a large battle was raging in the vicinity of the Stone Bridge.
The day was decided when additional Confederates arriving by railroad from the Shenandoah Valley marched to the sound of the battle and came on to the field in a position to flank the Yankee line, now having pushed the Rebels away from the Stone Bridge. The Yankee line broke, the troops fled and a rout ensued. The Confederates were too exhausted and disorganized to pursue and make their victory complete.
The Union commanders planned a surprise flank attack against the Confederate forces, which was initially somewhat successful. The Confederates turned near defeat into victory with an act of brilliance, an act of luck, and an act of courage.
The brilliance was the use of railroad to transport troops right into the front lines. This was likely the first large-scale use of mechanized land warfare. Troops under Confederate General Joseph Johnston had fooled Union troops under General Patterson. The South used its interior lines and the railway connecting to Manassas to save the Confederate forces under General Beauregard.
An act of great luck came when a Southern battalion found themselves at the base of a hill with Union cannon pointed straight at them. The might have been destroyed in a minute except that the Union officers disagreed about whether these were friend or enemy. Seeing the artillery hesitant to fire, they raced up the hill and captured the cannon.
The act of great courage occurred when the Southern lines began to weaken again and some units fell back. Their leaders pointed to Thomas Jackson standing with his men "like a stone wall" and this courageous stand heartened the southern men to withstand the attack and form a devastating and entirely unexpected counterattack. It's at this battle that General Thomas Jackson picked up the nickname of "Stonewall". He later on prove to be Robert E. Lee's top subordinate.
