To be technically correct, we are talking about mass, not matter. Einstein's equation e = mc2 does not necessarily mean that mass and energy are interchangeable - it means that they are the same thing. Mass is energy, and energy is mass. Its not an issue of converting from one to the other - its a matter of them being the same thing - just different frames of reference.
