Both sides initiated campains to destroy rail lines in enemy territory, when sherman captured atlanta the first thing he did was cut the rail lines, when Richmond was captured union forces cut the rail lines. The south was at a tremendous disadvantage due to the fact they only had about half as many tracks as the north. Trains were so important the battle of bull run( the first battle of the civil war) was fought to capture a rail station, the town of Manassas Junction.
