What was Viking's armor made from?

For the most part, very little. Iron was expensive. The common image of a viking decked out in armor with a huge sword and axe is quite wrong. If they had a metal helmet they were lucky. Usually they just wore furs and leather, armed with a spear (deadly weapon that uses very little Iron), and a wooden shield.

The types of metal armor that -was- available at the time included studded leather, ringmail and chianmail. Only princes were able to afford those, though.

Most viking armour was made of wood and leather as it had to be light. Their helmets were usually made out of bronze and some of their wooden shields were made stronger by using bronze or iron.

There was a great variety, since Viking warriors could be found living all over Europe, from Scandinavia to France, England, Sicily, Russia and the Byzantine Empire (say present Turkey). They would then usually adapt their outfit to local customs.

But a basic Viking outfit would consist of a chain mail dress to the knees, leather cover over the chest, and a plain helmet (without any horns! These were only added if a helmet was converted to a drinking bowl, usually as a funeral gift) which was made of steel for important Vikings and which was a thick leather cap reinforced by steel bands for a common soldier. In addition, they carried a usually round shield, a sword an a spear.
