What was the weather during the Battle of Saratoga?

It was bitterly cold and there was some accumulation of snow and ice on the ground. A winter storm front passed through Pennsylvania and New Jersey on Christmas Night, December 25, 1778. There was rain, then sleet, then snow, and the Hessian garrison in Trenton sent out very few patrols because of the severely cold weather. George Washington led a force of the Continental Army across the ice-clogged Delaware River in boats. He had worried that if the river froze, British forces from Philadelphia could have crossed and attacked his positions. The weather so deteriorated after Washington's men crossed (at 3 AM, three hours late) that the men under Generals Ewing and Cadwalader could not cross the river. But by mid-morning the snowfall had lessened and a successful attack was launched against the surprised Hessians. Nearly 900 were captured, many because ice caused their guns to malfunction. Fighting in the frigid weather caused two American deaths from frostbite, and several more from exposure in the following days.
