During World War II, or indeed any time frame of the last 100 years, Papua New Guinea is very wet, and very humid. It is a tropical island, and during monsoon season it gets a massive amount to rain, usually between December and March. The 'dry' season is June to September, but with the humidity levels so high, it never really is dry there.
