This is debatable, but the three worst earthquakes in the U.S. were likely the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the Alaskan earthquake of 1964, and the New Madrid, Missouri earthquake, which was in the early 19th century.

It depends as both earthquakes and tornadoes vary greatly in severity. Most earthquakes are so weak that the can't even be felt, only detected by sensitive instruments. Some tornado will cause little or no damage. However, the worst earthquakes are more destuctive than the worst tornadoes, as they can cause much more widespread damage.
Recently, we had two bad earthquakes. One in Chile, and that one was bad because it was scored 8.8. The one in Haiti was bad because it killed nearly three-thousand people. There were other mild earthquakes around the same time, but none were as bad as those two.
