Where was the battle of Guadalcanal location?

Gudalcanal between the U.S. and Japan. Gudalcanal between the U.S. and Japan.Guadalcanal is one of a chain of Islands called the Solomon Islands. The chain runs generally northwest-southeast a few hundred miles northeast of Australia, and the chain of islands is about six hundred miles long. Today the Solomons are a semi-independent nation, but at that time they were a British colony. The reason the US decided to invade Guadalcanal was that the Japanese, who had captured the Solomon Islands, were building an airfield on the Island. If they got it finished, they would be able to bomb northern Australia from it. They would also be able to attack ships carrying men and supplies to Australia.Guadalcanal is a fairly big island. Its about eighty miles long and more than thirty miles wide. When the US attacked, they landed close to the unfinished Japanese airfield, and quickly captured it. The US made no effort to secure the entire island, to clear the whole island of Japanese troops. The US was really not ready to begin offensive operations in the war yet, and the Guadalcanal operation was launched on a hurried and poorly planned and supplied basis. All the US tried to do was to hold a perimeter about ten miles wide and ten miles deep, centered around the airfield, which was near the southern coast of Guadalcanal. The US quickly finished the airfield and put it in operation. The Japanese soon landed reinforcing troops, and attacked the American perimeter. This was the pattern for the next six months. Instead of waiting until they had a large force built up, as soon as Japanese reinforcements landed, they would make their way to the American perimeter and attack. After about six months the Japanese gave up and evacuated their surviving troops. There were some long range patrols by Marine Raiders outside the perimeter, and a few other actions fought outside, but most of the fighting on the island involved Japanese attacks on the US defensive perimeter.
