In the beginning they did, when they met while campaigning for an 1882 bill to ban cigar manufacturing in New York tenement buildings. Roosevelt extremely opposed the bill until Gompers took him on a tour of the slums of New York City. Roosevelt exclaimed his astonishment that such conditions could exist and changed his mind, becoming a huge advocate of the bill. their relationship diminished though, as Roosevelt grew disenchanted with the labor movement. In 1908 he and Gompers exchanged angry letters about the power of the unions, and in 1912 Gompers, President of the AFL (American Federation of Labor) instructed them to oppose Roosevelt's Progressive Party.
Samuel Gompers was the first president of The American Federation of Labor. Coming from a working class background, Gompers could relate to the needs and beliefs of the working man. His goals were to establish solidarity, since union power rests in numbers, emancipation from the repressed, overworked and underpaid slave-like existence, He also wanted to instill in workers a form of self reliance which would eventually enable them to enact ways to bring about their goals without government intervention. Finally, he stressed the need for political independence and warned unions not to be considered aligned with one political party over the other.

Key figures included labor leaders like Samuel Gompers and activists such as Mother Jones.
