For seige warfare, there were many different types of defensive barriers used. The easiest was to pile up dirt to form a wall. Then they began to dig a moat in front of the wall that would slow the advancement of troops. There were all types of wooden barriers built, which have a variety of names(usually French). The simplest were spikes stuck in the ground and leaned towards the advacing enemy. Later, these spickes were inserted into a log that could be rolled into position. Crude defenses used tree branches or thorns and placed them so it would be difficult to move them.
