All modern submarines-twentieth century to date use some form ( incandescent, flourescent, built in light panels) of electric lighting, an idea suggested back in the nineteenth century by Verne. There is no other practical light source. Verne also suggested electrical back-lighting with small filaments of gauges and controls- an idea which antedates - and is still used- Radium and phosphorescent dials- back lighted gauges are used on RR equipment in tunnels, for example and are switched on.
