The primary Infantry weapon the Union used was the muzzle loading, Springfield percussion cap rifle, fitted with a socket bayonet. Officers carried a saber and their own revolver, the .44 caliber being the most popular, made by a variety of manufacturers including Colt and Remington. The Cavalry, even the enlisted troopers, also carried these weapons, but the men were armed with the breech loading Sharps carbine instead of the full-sized Springfield Most of the Artillery pieces were muzzle loading rifled howitzers firing either solid shot or antipersonnel canister shells.
