Well, the samurai used long curved swords called Katanas, but you probably already knew that. Their swords were not used for defense commonly though. There were different weapons for that. These included things like the Tessen, which was basically a iron fan disguised to look like a regular fan, and the Jutte, which was kind of like a primitive nightstick.
