In the Civil War conflict fought at Gettysburg in 1863, the Union (just as the Confederate) forces made use of almost all of the weapons available to ground troops in the era. A wide variety of cannon were employed by the Union defenders, as were both muskets and rifles and pistol weapons of numerous kinds, with the carbines of the Union cavalry being one particularly effective hand-held weapon during the battle. Various bladed weapons, especially cavalry sabers but including knives wielded by foot-soldiers, were also employed.
